The Constitution: Was adopted on July 5, 1995,through a popular referendum.
The system of Government:
The President: The Republic of Armenia has a system of presidential rule.
In accordance with the Constitution, the President ensures compliance with the Constitution, the normal operation of the legislative, the executive and the judiciary, and serves as the guarantor of sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of the Republic.
The President is elected by the citizens of the Republic of Armenia for a five-year term.
The executive power in the Republic of Armenia belongs to the Government of the Republic. The Government is composed of the Prime Minister and the Ministers. The President of the Republic appoints and removes the Prime Minister of the Republic. The President also appoints and removes all members of the Government nominated by the Prime Minister
The Legislative Power:
Legislative power in the Republic of Armenia belongs to the National Assembly. The National Assembly is a 131-seat body, of which 75 are elected from single-mandate districts and 56 by party list. Last parliamentary elections were held in May 1999.
The President of the Republic serves as a guarantor of independence of judicial bodies. He is the Head of the Council of Justice.
