International Best Practice
These pages provide links to a variety of websites all covering the basic principles of Sustainable Waste Management practiced in European Member states and other countries worldwide.
Waste is managed in the European Union (EU) principally as a result of two Directives, which are considered relevant to the management on Municipal Solid Waste Management in Armenia
-
The Directive on Waste (75/442/EEC) and
-
The Landfill of Waste Directive (1999/31/EC)
Sustainable Waste Management is epitomised by the Hierachy of Waste which places emphasis in the first instance on reducing the amount of waste produced, re-using as much waste as possible, and recycling as much waste as possible. The residual waste is dealt with by incineration (preferably an energy from waste scheme) or by landfilling the waste.
